Alton Water Park attracts a wide range of wildlife both on and around the water. Good numbers of great crested grebe are present with common terns using the purpose built nesting rafts. The Park is a stronghold for nightingales with up to 30 singing males during spring. With the help of volunteers Anglian Water has developed a three-mile nature trail on the south shore which includes woodland, a butterfly garden, a wildflower meadow, ponds and bird hides.
